Cooking Class Information

In this lesson, we will cook "Shikaimaki," which is Japanese traditional roll sushi, and "Miso Dengaku," which is sweet and spicy cuisine well accompanied with Japanese sake, also suits you together.

The pattern of Shikaimaki is so-called "Seigaiha," shaped like the wave and also used for Kimono, or traditional Japanese dress.
The pattern is well used for various celebrated ceremonies because it will be praying for continued happiness along with hope for peaceful life.

Speaking of Miso Dengaku, miso might remind you of only miso soup, but with Misodengaku, firstly we will make thick sauce using miso paste. Then grill tofu, eggplant, and other ingredient skewered with sesame oil, and eat it with the sauce.
The word "Dengaku" was derived from the traditional entertainment called "Dengaku" which was taken place in the Heian era (about 1,000 years ago). That was named by the shape of skewer of the tofu looked like the dancer in the entertainment.

If preferred, a grass of sparkling sake will be with the dish on the house. Please enjoy Japanese meal along with sake. We will also provide you with Japanese green tea as well.

Hello, I’m Kanami. I live in Yokohama with my husband and 1-year-old son.

My home is located in the central of Yokohama, easy access by train/subway from the famous sightseeing spots.

5 minutes from Yokohama station
40 minutes from Shibuya station
*No needs to change trains

My class is held at the kitchen in my private home. You can relax and enjoy the experience of Japanese local, modern, standard (lol) home in the center of Yokohama.

I am a managerial dietician (a kind of nutritious specialist). I worked in the field of food/nutrition for 9 years. I love eating, cooking and traveling. Also, I love Yokohama so much that I can give you information about Yokohama, such as nice restaurants and sightseeing spots if you want. Even sometimes, I’m happy to show you around a little bit when I can.

My goal for this teaching experience is not only about teaching or cooking itself, but also I would like you to know more about Japan and like Japan more. What’s more, I believe that it’s very nice to welcome people from all over the world and experience something I usually can’t do here in Japan. Now, I’m happy to have this opportunity to welcome people and talk about something like my country and yours, etc.

I’m still learning English, but my husband can speak English well, so he helps my class (he is not good at cooking though lol). You don’t have to worry about taking pictures because my husband can do that instead of you and present them for you (of course, no charge!)

I hope I will see you soon! Let’s have fun!

Kanami was an amazing instructor! She was very organized and was great at explaining each step in the cooking process. She also provided a little history on each of the dishes and created a take home recipe pamphlet for future use. The whole class was so much fun and it was a wonderful experience having lunch with Kanami and her lovely family. I would definitively recommend this class for anyone wanting to learn how to cook delicious and healthy Japanese cuisine!
