Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken) or Tempura
Japan's favorite home-style fried chicken, marinated in soy sauce, ginger and garlic. Crispy outside and juicy inside. Choose your style: lean and lighter, with tips from my experience cooking for athletes, or rich and juicy. Then make 3 Japanese sauces to taste-test.

Miso Soup
A warm, comforting soup Japanese families enjoy almost every day, made from scratch with real dashi (Japanese soup stock), miso, tofu and wakame seaweed.

Seasonal Side Dish
A simple, healthy vegetable dish, such as spinach ohitashi with a light dashi and soy dressing.

Japanese Rice
Fluffy Japanese rice cooked in a rice cooker, the heart of every Japanese meal.

Japanese Snacks and Sweets Tasting
Try my favorite Japanese snacks and sweets, from delicious chocolates to classic local treats.

  • Tempura

    Tempura

Tempura (天ぷら) is a classical Portuguese dish brought to and popularized by Japan, consisting of seafood or vegetables that have been battered and deep fried. Tempura is a typical home-style cooking in Japan. It is often referred to as a representative dish to Japan. Although there are various theories, it is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu, the general of the Edo period, liked tempura so much that he allegedly died from eating too much.

  • Karaage

    Karaage

Japanese fried chicken, karaage is made by marinating bite-size pieces of chicken in sake, soy sauce, ginger and garlic before coating them generously with potato starch. When fried, the starch turns into an ultra crispy shell encasing a flavorful juicy bite of chicken. Absolutely great with beer.

  • Rice

    Rice

Rice is a staple food in Japan. In all most every family, there is a rice cooker. There is variety of Japanese rice brands such as Koshihikari and Hitomebore.

  • Miso Soup

    Miso Soup

Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup. It's base is "dashi" (Japanese fish stock) and Miso paste. Common added ingredients are Tofu, Green onion and deep‐fried tofu but differs by personal preference. The type of miso is different from region. In western and Easter Japan white miso is mostly used.

Life Comfort Kitchen

Hi! I'm a Japanese mom of two boys. My home is close to Shibuya, so it's easy to visit!
I lived in New York and Utah for about two years and even had a baby there, so I know how exciting and confusing a new country can be.
In my work, I support international staff new to Japan, teaching workplace Japanese and manners and helping with daily life, such as hospital visits. I also cook balanced meals for athletes.
At home, I love cooking Japanese family favorites, from karaage to omusoba, and I pack bento for my sons every day.
Come experience the everyday Japan you can't find on a tour, and ask me anything about your trip, from the Shinkansen to souvenirs. I can't wait to welcome you!
