  • Nikujaga

    Nikujaga

Nikujaga literally means “meat and potatoes”, from two of the main ingredients niku (meat) and jagaimo (potatoes). It’s a comfort food for the Japanese and it is a very popular meal cooked at home. It is often considered “mother’s cooking” (“ofukuro no aji” おふくろの味 in Japanese) as each household cooks it just slightly different. The food itself is very simple and homely, and the warm bowl of your mother’s nikujaga brings one back to their roots. It is probably the most popular dish among all kinds of nimono (煮物 Japanese stewed dishes).

  • Rice

    Rice

Rice is a staple food in Japan. In all most every family, there is a rice cooker. There is variety of Japanese rice brands such as Koshihikari and Hitomebore.

Cooking Class Information

You can choose 2-3 Japanese home-cooked dishes that you want to make and have a fun cooking experience.

- Tonkatsu
Tonkatsu is a Japanese dish that consists of a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet.
- Ebifurai
There are surprisingly many dishes that originate in Japan that look like foreign cuisine. One such dish is fried shrimp. Fried shrimp originated from a Western restaurant in Tokyo that was founded in 1895.
- Maki-Shushi
Maki-Sushi is written in Japanese as “巻き寿司”, where maki “巻き” means to roll. Of course, maki sushi is made by rolling the rice and ingredients in a sheet of nori.
- Pork Shabu Shabu
Speaking of shabu-shabu, beef shabu-shabu is famous in Japan, but pork shabu-shabu is also delicious when eaten with a refreshing dashi stock as the main dipping sauce.
- Nikujaga
Nikujaga is a traditional Japanese food in which the meat, potatoes, and onion are stewed in a sweetened soy sauce and mirin.
- Curry Rice Japanese style
Curry rice is commonly eaten as a rice dish in Japan. Curry is a dish that originated in India, but the Japanese have made various changes and evolved it into a Japanese national dish.
- Japanese fried chicken
