A Guide To Salmon Sushi

One of the most famous Japanese cuisines around is sushi.

This is by far more popular than any of the other seafoods that are currently eaten in Japan.

To begin with, let’s understand what sushi is.

The dish evolved several centuries ago in Japan, when the people would ferment fish using rice. Initially, the rice would be thrown away and only the fish consumed. This however changed with the passage of time, when the people started eating the rice as well.

Today, the sushi has become a very popular dish in Japan, from Tokyo to Hokkaido, that is. Raw fish is the key ingredient used in sushi, which forms the central part of the sushi.

This is wrapped with fermented rice, which in turn is wrapped using seaweed. Of course, this is but a rough understanding of what sushi is, given that the dish has evolved considerably over the years.

The salmon is a saltwater fish, consumed across the world, including Japan.

It is found in most of the water around the world, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It is in fact one of the most popular seafoods among communities living near coastal areas.

There are several species of salmon that is consumed in Japan. Of them all, the most popular happens to be the ones that were actively promoted by the Norwegians, whose forays began in places like Tokyo and spread elsewhere.

About Salon Sushi

Although it is a fairly popular fish, its consumption in Japan wasn’t really popular in Japan until the Norwegians began to market it in the country.

Until the Norwegian campaign began, there was little to no consumption of Salmon in the country, due to several reasons such as quality, catch numbers, etc. Norway began to advertise its farmed salmon in Japan, owing to an excess production, which soon led to a boom in salmon sales.

The first place where salmon meat made its appearance was in the kaiten-zushi or conveyor belt sushi restaurants. From there, it spread to every other aspect of Japanese society. Even today, the most common sushi that is consumed in the Japanese kaiten-zushi restaurants, are that of Salmon.

The way that it is produced is fairly simple and similar to other sushis. To start off, the salmon is wrapped with rice, vegetables and other seasonings. Once the entire salmon is covered, it is wrapped with seaweed, rice paper or slices of cucumber. After this is done, it is sliced into the small iconic pieces of sushi that are eaten everywhere, from restaurants in Tokyo to those in America and Europe.

How To Eat Salmon Sushi

The way to eat salmon sushi is explained below.

  • To start off, know how the sushi is eaten. It can be eaten either by hand or with the help of chopsticks. If you are eating with chopsticks, avoid rubbing them together, as it is considered a rude gesture.
  • There are two choices of side dishes commonly eaten with sushi, namely wasabi and shoyu.
The wasabi is a sauce made from horseradish, while the shoyu is a traditional Japanese soy sauce.
Both are to be used in small amounts, as opposed to smearing them over the sushi.
  • The first sauce to use is wasabi. Being a very spicy sauce, make sure that you taste a bit of it to know how much is ideal. Afterwards, mildly dip it in the shoyu and you are ready to go.
  • You can follow normal eating etiquettes for other dishes, if you happen to be eating them.

As a whole, the sushi is perhaps one of the most exciting of Japanese dishes you could ever enjoy.

With its unique taste, preparation style and overall uniqueness, the sushi, whether of salmon or any other, is something you must try at least once in your life. And this holds true whether you’re just visiting a Japanese city like Tokyo or are in your home in New York City.
