    Onigiri

    Onigiri is a Japanese comfort food made from steamed rice formed into the typical triangular, ball, or cylinder shapes and usually wrapped with nori(dried seaweed). Stuffed with a a variety of fillings and flavors, these rice balls make an ideal quick snack and are a fun alternative to sandwitches for lunch.

  • Karaage

    Karaage

    Japanese fried chicken, karaage is made by marinating bite-size pieces of chicken in sake, soy sauce, ginger and garlic before coating them generously with potato starch. When fried, the starch turns into an ultra crispy shell encasing a flavorful juicy bite of chicken. Absolutely great with beer.

    Rice is a staple food in Japan. In all most every family, there is a rice cooker. There is variety of Japanese rice brands such as Koshihikari and Hitomebore.

  • Miso Soup

    Miso Soup

    Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup. It's base is "dashi" (Japanese fish stock) and Miso paste. Common added ingredients are Tofu, Green onion and deep‐fried tofu but differs by personal preference. The type of miso is different from region. In western and Easter Japan white miso is mostly used.

    Green Tea

    The astringent constituent in Japanese tea is a type of polyphenol called catechin. Japan has done a great deal with the humble tea leaf. For example some benefits of the catechin in the tea leaf can lower cholesterol in some cases. Roasted over charcoal at a high temperature and grown under shade for at least 20 days are one of the examples. The most popular Japanese tea might be ryokucha. Depending on the timing of picking the leaves, the grade, the price can be noticeably different.

    The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

Hello, my name is Minako, and I am a Japanese cooking instructor.
This cooking class is designed for visitors to Japan who want to enjoy not only seeing and eating, but also experiencing Japan by cooking.

Using easy-to-find ingredients from local supermarkets,
we will make traditional Japanese home-style dishes that Japanese people eat in their daily lives.

The recipes are simple, delicious, and easy to recreate even after you return home.

While cooking together, I will also share stories about Japanese culture, food customs,
and everyday life in Japan.

I hope this class will become one of the most memorable experiences of your trip to Japan!
