    Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

Our tea ceremony with Kazuko ohba-san was delightful! She welcomed us into her home warmly and helped us put on our kimonos. She demonstrated the tea ceremony for us and then allowed us to try it ourselves. She gave clear instructions and directions and was very patient with us. The sweets she offered were also very tasty. Thank you very much Kazuko ohba-san!

Kazuko was AMAZING!! I highly recommend anyone visiting Osaka to visit her and make a day around the beautifully historic Sakai area. Kazuko was so friendly and welcoming. She taught us the traditional Sen no Rikyu tea ceremony and allowed us each to practice a few times. Afterwards, she allowed us to wear her family member’s kimonos. Her tea experience was by far my favorite experience I’ve had in Japan. I am so grateful for Kazuko and highly recommend her!
