Go On The Off-Beat Trip To The Volcanic Island Of Aogashima, Tokyo

Japan is famous for many things, and one of them is the presence of volcanoes. Aogashima is a volcanic island located close to Tokyo. If you are into beaches and tropical weather, Aogashima must feature in your must-visit list. It is still an active volcano, and there are two small villages existing there. These are typically small Japanese villages with not much of modern amenities. The lovers of trekking and hiking will find plenty of places to stroll around the island. The steep cliffs form the walls of the volcano ending down in the ocean. If you want to get a first-hand experience of how Japanese go about living even when residing right adjacent to an active volcano. Aogashima is the place to visit.

How To Get There? 

It is quite challenging to reach the island. You have an option of going to Hachijojima, helicopter or ship to the island. To reach Hachijojima, you have to take a flight or a ship from Tokyo.

Camping is one of the main reasons for locals to visit the island. However, you will need to reserve a camping site well in advance at least two weeks before at the village post office by e-mail and fax.

Wait for the reservation confirmation until plan for the camping come out. In case of emergencies, the village post office might be closed down due to weather or eruptions.

Hiking trails exist along the island. Climbing down the crater of Maruyama is one of the most exciting activities of great thrill in the island. The presence of geothermal sauna rooms is a feature of great interest here at Aogashima. Moreover, go for stargazing from the Oyamatenbo Park viewpoint. 

 

What To Eat?  

There is no restaurant on the island. However, there are two local bars where you can sip the alcohol of Shochu made of sweet potato.

Where To Stay?

Staying at a local inn is an option or else going to stay at the campsite. Make sure to carry a bottle or container to store water. Do not drink water from the tap. You may buy water from the village office or from the vending machines. At the inn, you will enjoy lodging and food. You may even get a local guide to take you through the small island.
