Tonjiru

Onigiri is a food that is very familiar to Japanese people. I remember that my mom used to make some for obento (lunch box) when I was little. It is made by putting ingredients into freshly cooked rice and forming it into a triangular shape by hand.
One of the reasons for its popularity is a variety of fillings, varying from classic to modern ingredients. There are onigiri restaurants and there you choose what you like.
So, why don’t we try that at our kitchen?? We will make various kinds of fillings, and make your own onigiri with your hands! It’ll be fun!
We’ll make Tonjiru as well, and learn a little about Japanese UMAMI. This soup has a lots of veggies, tofu and konjac in it, and the pork meat deepens the flavor. I make this when I think my kid needs more veggies;-) It’s super healthy and umami-ful soup!
Miou has recently opened her cooking class, where you can dive into the world of Japanese traditional ingredients and savor their Umami through hands-on culinary experiences.
At Panda Kitchen Tokyo, you’ll have the opportunity to take cooking lessons at her home, which offers a genuine glimpse into the typical size and lifestyle of Japanese households. Currently, Miou offers classes on making delicious ramen and gyoza, and onigiri and pork & veggies miso soup classes.
Miou’s journey with English began at the age of 13 when she spent a summer in Albuquerque, NM, and continued as a Rotary Exchange student in Sterling/Rock Falls , IL, at 17. These experiences instilled in her a love for connecting with people. She spent over a decade teaching English at junior high schools, collaborating with amazing ALTs from around the world.
Her passion for cooking led her to study at a culinary and nutrition school for a year, where she earned her chef’s license. Though her kitchen is small, it’s brimming with possibilities for sharing joyful cooking experiences. Miou warmly invites you to visit her kitchen as you would a friend’s home—kids are welcome too!
