Styles of sushi and its presentation vary widely, but the key ingredient is "sushi rice", also referred to as shari (しゃり), or sumeshi (酢飯).

Rice is a staple food in Japan. In all most every family, there is a rice cooker. There is variety of Japanese rice brands such as Koshihikari and Hitomebore.

  • Tea Ceremony

    Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

We loved our cooking class with Yumiko. She was so welcoming and made us feel at home immediately. The receipes were her own and despite our lack of experience, everything was delicious. We even had a private tea ceremony where she taught us how to do it. Such a wonderful time!

Yumiko-san is such a lovely person, she was really accomodating and always responded to our questions very promptly. The experience was extremely enjoyable - Yumiko-san was very knowledgable and guided us through the whole process of making the different kinds of sushi. The Japanese tea ceremony after was a beautiful experience and we were able to try our hands at whisking matcha for each other. Overall it was wonderful experience which was made even better sharing it with Yumiko-san. Special mention to her cute kitty Guri-chan who accompanied us for a bit as well ☺️ Definitely recommend this experience!

My husband and I had an incredible experience taking Yumiko's class - it was a highlight from our two week trip! The course is offered in Yumiko's home and Yumiko is a wealth of knowledge. The cooking portion of the class was so interesting and intimate; Yumiko shares lots of information on ingredients and recipes as you prepare each dish yourself. We feel confident now preparing these dishes on our own at home. As an added bonus, it was very special to participate in the tea ceremony with Yumiko who is a certified tea ceremony provider. I couldn't recommend this class more!

This was our first time experiencing a cooking lesson and it was a fantastic experience! Yumiko was very welcoming, friendly and professional yet down to earth. I went there with my boyfriend and there was one more person with us. Yumiko made sure to include all of us during the stay. It was very interesting to listen about Japanese cooking but also Yumiko’s personal experiences which she was happy to share about. Totally different from watching YouTube videos on how to make sushi. The food we made turned out so good! We recommend this to everyone visiting Kyoto. This was money and time well spent. Thank you so much Yumiko for this “ichiho ichie”, okini!

Our cooking class with Mrs Yumiko was a thouroughly delightful experience. Not only did we learn the basics of making dashi stock, tamagoyaki and various shushi. Mrs Yumiko shared with us her profound experience of selecting quality foods and shared her wealth of knowledge in cooking tricks. And all this in a most charming way. The highlight came at the end with a wonderful and enlightening tea ceremony. Thank you, Mrs Yumiko, for sharing with us some important concepts of Japanese culture. We will be more than pleased to see you again...

I have been to Kyoto for 4 times already and I can say that my cooking class with Yumiko-san is my favorite Kyoto experience! :) My boyfriend and I enjoyed everything - from Yumiko-san's 自己紹介 (self-introduction) to cooking sushi/miso soup/tamagoyaki. She also let us experience how a Japanese tea ceremony is conducted. Aside from cooking, we have also learned different Japan food culture&history. I strongly recommend Yumiko-san's cooking class to someone who is looking for something new to do in Kyoto! :)

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our class with Yumiko. She was a gracious host and an excellent teacher. This is more than a cooking class, as Yumiko will introduce you to both herself and various aspects of Japanese culture over the course of the lesson . By the end you'll feel like guests at the home of a friend who is good company, an excellent cook and teacher, and extremely knowledgeable. We particularly appreciated how well Yumiko explained not only how to make the dishes, but the history behind the food and the ingredients. The meal was delicious and the experience was perfect.
