  • Nigiri Sushi

    Nigiri Sushi

Sushi (寿司, 鮨) is a Japanese dish of specially prepared vinegared rice (鮨飯 sushi-meshi), usually with some sugar and salt, combined with a variety of ingredients (ネタ neta), such as seafood (most commonly and often raw), vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits. Styles of sushi and its presentation vary widely, but the key ingredient is "sushi rice", also referred to as shari (しゃり), or sumeshi (酢飯).

  • Rice

    Rice

Rice is a staple food in Japan. In all most every family, there is a rice cooker. There is variety of Japanese rice brands such as Koshihikari and Hitomebore.

  • Miso Soup

    Miso Soup

Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup. It's base is "dashi" (Japanese fish stock) and Miso paste. Common added ingredients are Tofu, Green onion and deep‐fried tofu but differs by personal preference. The type of miso is different from region. In western and Easter Japan white miso is mostly used.

  • Tea Ceremony

    Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

I was born and grew up in Kyoto city. My grandmother, Kaji was a dedicated cook and always created beautiful Japanese foods. Thanks to her, I have a lot of wonderful memories made with local foods. Luckily, she taught me how to cook and present them. I have lived in and visited many countries and have eaten lots of delicious meals. I have also made wonderful friends in each country and at the same time learned how to cook some favorite dishes from around the world. I love sharing my passion for cooking and make it easy for you to enjoy Japanese cooking at home. I also hold licenses for the tea ceremony and Japanese style flower arrangement. So in your course, you can ask me not only how to conduct the powdered green tea but also the Japanese way of presentation. My condominium is located in a beautiful and cultural area. There are many magnificent shrines and temples near my place.

This was our first time experiencing a cooking lesson and it was a fantastic experience! Yumiko was very welcoming, friendly and professional yet down to earth. I went there with my boyfriend and there was one more person with us. Yumiko made sure to include all of us during the stay. It was very interesting to listen about Japanese cooking but also Yumiko’s personal experiences which she was happy to share about. Totally different from watching YouTube videos on how to make sushi. The food we made turned out so good! We recommend this to everyone visiting Kyoto. This was money and time well spent. Thank you so much Yumiko for this “ichiho ichie”, okini!

Our cooking class with Mrs Yumiko was a thouroughly delightful experience. Not only did we learn the basics of making dashi stock, tamagoyaki and various shushi. Mrs Yumiko shared with us her profound experience of selecting quality foods and shared her wealth of knowledge in cooking tricks. And all this in a most charming way. The highlight came at the end with a wonderful and enlightening tea ceremony. Thank you, Mrs Yumiko, for sharing with us some important concepts of Japanese culture. We will be more than pleased to see you again...

Our 9 year old son was equally thrilled and Yumiko delivered her class in a manner which was easy to understand and very clear, her English is excellent. She responded promptly to all of our arrangements pre meeting and was kind enough to cater to our dietary preferences too. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Kyoto. Thank you, Yumiko San.

I have been to Kyoto for 4 times already and I can say that my cooking class with Yumiko-san is my favorite Kyoto experience! :) My boyfriend and I enjoyed everything - from Yumiko-san's 自己紹介 (self-introduction) to cooking sushi/miso soup/tamagoyaki. She also let us experience how a Japanese tea ceremony is conducted. Aside from cooking, we have also learned different Japan food culture&history. I strongly recommend Yumiko-san's cooking class to someone who is looking for something new to do in Kyoto! :)

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our class with Yumiko. She was a gracious host and an excellent teacher. This is more than a cooking class, as Yumiko will introduce you to both herself and various aspects of Japanese culture over the course of the lesson . By the end you'll feel like guests at the home of a friend who is good company, an excellent cook and teacher, and extremely knowledgeable. We particularly appreciated how well Yumiko explained not only how to make the dishes, but the history behind the food and the ingredients. The meal was delicious and the experience was perfect.
