・Temaki Sushi (Hand-rolled Sushi)
Temaki sushi is a fun, casual style of sushi. You put vinegared rice and fillings on a sheet of nori (dried seaweed), then roll it into a cone by hand. We'll prepare fresh sashimi (raw fish such as tuna and salmon), egg omelet, cucumber, and more. In Japan, families often enjoy temaki sushi at home for parties and special days. Our boys will show you how to roll it!
・Osuimono (Clear Soup with Homemade Dashi)
Dashi is a soup stock and the base of Japanese cooking. Together, we'll make dashi from scratch using kombu (kelp) and katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes). Then we'll turn it into osuimono, a light and elegant clear soup. You'll be surprised how much flavor comes from just two simple ingredients!
・Green Tea
We'll serve Japanese green tea with the meal.
In this cooking class, we will make temaki sushi (hand-rolled sushi) and osuimono (clear soup) together with our lively family!
First, we will make dashi, the soup stock that is the base of Japanese cooking. You will soak kombu (kelp) in water, heat it, and add katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes). You can smell and taste how rich the flavor is, even with just two simple ingredients. Then we will turn the dashi into osuimono, a light and elegant clear soup.
Next, we will make sushi rice. You will mix freshly cooked rice with sweet vinegar, and fan it to cool, just like Japanese families do at home.
Then it's time for temaki sushi! We will prepare fresh sashimi, egg omelet, cucumber, and other fillings. You will put rice and your favorite fillings on a sheet of nori (dried seaweed) and roll it into a cone by hand. Our three boys will show you how to roll it, and you can try as many combinations as you like!
Finally, we will all sit down at the table and enjoy the meal together. It's a fun and relaxed experience where you can feel like part of a Japanese family. Kids are very welcome!
Emiko
Hi! We're a lively family of five: my husband, me, and our three boys (one in junior high, two in elementary school). The boys all play baseball, and our eldest is a great cook! Let's make temaki (hand-rolled) sushi together and enjoy a fun, noisy Japanese family meal!
