    Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

Cooking Class Information

This tour offers an authentic tea ceremony experience with OMOTESENKE instructors in a convenient tea room in Shimokitazawa.
You can also see the real life of Japanese people because we'll take you to a tea room in a residential area in Setagaya Ward.

A lecturer from OMOTESENKE will show you how to make OMOTESENKE style matcha, and serve Japanese sweets and matcha.
Let's master the behavior of guests in a Japanese house and learn the manners and spirit of tea in a tea room.
Of course, you can try making your own matcha!

We also explain the beautiful spirit of Japan in the tea ceremony.
You can do a digital detox in the tea room.
Please enjoy it as a meditation time.

What to bring: Please bring socks (preferably white). Please refrain from wearing shorts or too short skirts.
*There is also a sitting support tool. If you don't like sitting up straight, you can hold the event at the table.

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the authentic tea ceremony experience! This was our first time, and we were mesmerized watching the beautiful flow of "temae" in making the matcha tea. The teachers were very kind in explaining our questions, and their kimonos were so beautiful. It was very interesting to learn the meaning behind the words on "kakejiku," and sweets, matcha bowls, and other items. We highly recommend Mayuko!

Hi Mayu-san, it was a pleasure to be welcomed into your lovely home for the tea ceremony this past week in Tokyo. You were a very kind host and beautifully dressed in your kimono. You took the time to explain the tea room and each step of the ceremony and the significance of the rituals. The treats were also very yummy! I really felt honored to experience this special moment while visiting Japan. Thank you again. Sincerely Erin Fairbairn-Stammer
