・Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki (Main Dish)
Okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese pancake made by layering ingredients like cabbage, pork, and noodles on a griddle. In Hiroshima, we cook everything in layers instead of mixing it all together first — that's what makes our style different from the more famous Osaka-style okonomiyaki! This is the heart of the experience, and you'll cook it yourself from start to finish.
・Matcha (Optional)
Matcha is a finely ground Japanese green tea, traditionally whisked with hot water until it turns frothy. If you'd like, I can show you how to prepare a warm bowl of matcha the traditional way, for a relaxing taste of Japanese tea culture.
・Yukata (Optional)
A yukata is a light, casual cotton kimono, often worn in summer or at home in Japan. If you're interested, you can try one on during the experience — a fun optional way to feel what it's like to dress in traditional Japanese style!
・Origami (Optional)
Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, used to create shapes like cranes, flowers, and animals from a single sheet of paper. If you'd like, I can teach you a simple origami design to fold and take home as a small souvenir from your visit!
In this cooking class, we can cook Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki together! Okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese pancake, but unlike the more famous Osaka-style, where all the ingredients are mixed together, the Hiroshima version is built in layers — that's what makes it different.
We'll start by cooking a thin crepe on the griddle, then layer on cabbage, bean sprouts, and pork belly. Next, we'll add freshly cooked yakisoba noodles and a fried egg, and carefully stack everything together — you'll learn the local technique for flipping and layering it just right! Finally, we'll finish it off with okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, aonori (dried seaweed flakes), and katsuobushi (bonito flakes).
The result: a crispy, golden exterior with layers of savory, saucy goodness inside.
If you'd like, we can also add a touch of Japanese culture to the day with optional matcha tea, a yukata to try on, or a simple origami lesson!
Hiroko
I was born and raised in Hiroshima, where okonomiyaki has been part of my life since childhood.
Traveling abroad and meeting people from other countries, I realized that Japan has so much wonderful culture to offer, yet surprisingly few real opportunities to experience it firsthand.
That's why I started this experience — not just a meal, but a chance to cook with your own hands, talk with a local host, and connect with Japanese culture along the way.
What matters most to me isn't how well you cook.
It's creating a moment where you leave thinking, "I'm so glad I met you in Japan today."
I hope that cooking okonomiyaki together, sharing laughs, and getting a taste of Japanese culture becomes a memory that stays with you long after your trip ends.
