  • Tea Ceremony

    Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

Cooking Class Information

On this tour, you can experience authentic private tea ceremony in the cosy tearoom of a tea master.

The tearoom is located in a quiet residential area in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, and will also offer a glimpse into the life of the Japanese people.

The host demonstrates formal matcha making procedure and serve matcha to you. You will learn about the tea ceremony, manners in the tearoom as a guest, and experience making a bowl of matcha by yourself!

Tea ceremony is a traditional Japanese culture and a comprehensive art form, including such as flowers for tea and the hanging scroll in the tearoom. Enjoy also learning the Zen spirit behind the tea ceremony. After the experience, you will feel as tranquil as after mindfulness meditation.

We will be waiting for you with seasonal Japanese confectionery and delicious matcha.

Minimum of 2 participants. It is a private session just for your group. You will need to take your shoes off in the tearoom (tatami mat room), so please wear or bring socks.

Opportunity to meet Sohki was highlight of our Japan trip. She welcomed us at her house and showed us the art of tea ceremony which was also interactive as we got to prepare the tea ourselves. We learned so much about Japanese culture and people as she was very kind and spoke very good English. We will hopefully meet again sometimes. Highly recommended.
