  • Udon

    Udon

Udon (うどん) is a type of thick wheat flour noodle. It is similar to Italian pasta, but much thicker. It has been eaten all over Japan as an easy-to-eat popular meal, and a substitute meal for rice dishes. Udon is often served hot as a noodle soup in its simplest form, as "kake udon", in a mildly flavoured broth called kakejiru, which is made of dashi, soy sauce, and mirin. The flavor of broth and topping vary from region to region.

Cooking Class Information

Add salt water to wheat flour and knead well.
Once it's gathered, put it in a plastic bag and step on it with your foot to stretch it out. Repeat this twice. Roll the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.

In the meantime, boil water and prepare the mentsuyu, toppings, and curry.

Roll out the dough, fold it, and cut it with a knife. Boil in boiling water for about 10 minutes. Soak in cold water, chill, and use half as cold udon noodles.
Enjoy the other half as warm curry udon. It's fun to knead and step on it!

We had so much fun learning to make udon with Wakako — she is such a sweet person and a wonderful teacher! Our udon turned out just like the real thing and we’re all so excited to try out her techniques once we get home. Bonuses included lots of snacks and tea throughout the lesson, and we got to meet her two cats. Highly recommend signing up for a cooking class with her. Thank you Wakako-san!

Our cooking experience with Wakako was really great. She was a fantastic hostess, guiding our family of four through the process of making udons with enthusiasm. The tasty sides dish complemented very well the hot udons. Oishii! Her adorable cats added to the charm of the experience. Highly recommended !

Wakako is a fantastic host that is very knowledgeable and caring. The lesson was very smooth and fun, as she treated us to tea, drinks, and sweets throughout alongside her two incredibly cute cats. The udon came out extremely tasty, and she also gave us recipes to take home. If we had more time in Tokyo we would have gone for her other lessons as well.

My husband and I loved our class with Wakako and her cats! She greeted us with a warm cup of tea and gave clear instructions for making the udon. While waiting for the dough to rest, we played with her cats and learned a little about Japanese life from Wakako. Her husband was also there and played some of his old enka vinyls for us while we cooked and ate. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and got us outside of the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo for a bit. Thank you Wakako!!

Our Udon cooking class with Wakako was a fantastic experience. My wife and I enjoyed the class which was both fun and relaxing. We even got to eat our cooked noodles afterwards. We also loved being entertained by her two cats. A great experience for anyone looking for something a little different in Tokyo. Wakako was a great friendly host.

I warmly recommend a cooking class with Wakako, she was an amazing host! She was very accommodating because I am vegetarian and she adapted the recipe for me. She also really took the time to answer my questions and share about udon noodles of course but also about japanese culture in general. She is very easygoing and created a nice atmosphere for the workshop, which is already one of my favorite memory from my trip to Japan :)

We had an amazing time cooking with Wakako in her beautiful home. She was super friendly and gave very clear instructions - we felt very at home foot-kneading our udon! Followed by an informative prep of different japanese toppings. Overall this has been the highlight of our trip so far! We could not recommend it more - not to mention her 2 amazing cats :) Thank you Wakako!
