  • Tempura

    Tempura

Tempura (天ぷら) is a classical Portuguese dish brought to and popularized by Japan, consisting of seafood or vegetables that have been battered and deep fried. Tempura is a typical home-style cooking in Japan. It is often referred to as a representative dish to Japan. Although there are various theories, it is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu, the general of the Edo period, liked tempura so much that he allegedly died from eating too much.

  • Onigiri

    Onigiri

Onigiri is a Japanese comfort food made from steamed rice formed into the typical triangular, ball, or cylinder shapes and usually wrapped with nori(dried seaweed). Stuffed with a a variety of fillings and flavors, these rice balls make an ideal quick snack and are a fun alternative to sandwitches for lunch.

  • Miso Soup

    Miso Soup

Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup. It's base is "dashi" (Japanese fish stock) and Miso paste. Common added ingredients are Tofu, Green onion and deep‐fried tofu but differs by personal preference. The type of miso is different from region. In western and Easter Japan white miso is mostly used.

  • Tea Ceremony

    Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony is a centuries-old tradition closely tied to Zen Buddhist principles, and a popular way to experience Japanese culture. There are several variations on this ritual. At its base, powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared and served in accordance with strict rules. Oftentimes, wagashi (Japanese sweets) is served alongside the bitter green tea.

This was hands down my favorite experience in my 4 weeks in Japan. Hitomi-san and her husband were so incredible during the time they hosted me, and I learned how to make extremely delicious tempura and onigiri. If you're in Osaka, don't miss this incredible opportunity. Thank you so much Hitomi-san and your husband!

We had such a great time cooking with Hitomi! She and her husband are incredibly kind and made us feel very welcome in their home. I'm vegan but my husband is not, and Hitomi was able to adapt the lesson so that we could both have a fulfilling experience. Beyond learning how to make miso soup, tempura, and onigiri, we were also able to experience an informal tea ceremony and learn more about life in Japan. All of the food was delicious and I feel confident enough to try making it back at home in Canada. As a parting gift, she gave us a set of onigiri molds which will make forming the rice balls even easier. Thank you so much for this experience!

Our cooking class with Hitomi was fantastic. Her husband Ted picked us up at the station, at their family house we were greeted warmly with tea and sweets. Hitomi was very well prepared and guided us through the steps of preparation clearly and in great English. We learned a lot and were also able to ask more questions about Japanese cuisine and ingredients. We made miso soup, varies tempura and onigiri, and spontaneously even some tamagoyaki! We ended up with so much food that we couldn't eat it all for dinner, so Hitomi and her daughter lovingly packed it for us to take on our journey. We highly recommend a cooking class with Hitomi, as for a few hours you become part of a Japanese family and get to experience traditional Japanese home cooking :)
